Prior to his arrival as head football coach at Western Michigan, the Broncos had not experienced a winning campaign since going 9-3 in 2000. After bottoming out at 1-10 in 2004, Bill Cubit was named head coach.
Since his arrival the Broncos have experienced back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in six years and made an appearance in last year's inaugural edition of the International Bowl, Western Michigan's first bowl appearance since its 1988 California Bowl contest against Fresno State. Today Western Michigan announced an amended incentive-laden contract that Western Michigan hopes will keep Cubit in the fold for the foreseeable future.
Starting with this season, Cubit's base pay will increase by 12% going from $170,000 annually to $191,000. In addition, Cubit will earn $40,000 for speaking engagements and public appearances according to a release from the university. The university indicated that the additional compensation related to speaking engagements and public appearances will be provided through "sponsoring agreements" with outside entities. Cubit's current deal runs through February 28, 2010.
Additional incentives are also included with regard to academic and on-field achievements which will also be covered through funds secured via outside sponsorship agreements with Western Michigan.
Addressing Cubit's amended contract, Western Michigan Athletic Director Kathy Beauregard, in a prepared statement, indicated "It is a tremendous statement from the supporters of our football program and from the University to combine an increase in base salary with an incentive package that will come from external funds."
The Broncos have been tabbed as the favorites for the upcoming 2007 football season by the MAC News Media Association and open the season on the road against West Virginia on September 1.
