Ohio senior tailback Kalvin McRae has been named to the 2007 Walter Camp Foundation's Player of the Year Award "watch list." Earlier this season McRae was placed on the "watch list" for the Maxwell Award.
McRae returns for his senior season at Ohio after rushing for 1,252 and 15 touchdowns last season, becoming the first Bobcat running back to turn in back-to-back 1,000 yard rushing seasons in over thirty years. McRae helped to lead the Bobcats to a 9-5 campaign in 2006 and an appearance in the GMAC Bowl, Ohio's first bowl appearance since the 1968 Tangerine Bowl. McRae enters this season as the NCAA's third leading active returning rusher with 2,964 yards rushing.
The watch list, which currently consists of 35 candidates, will be narrowed to ten semi-finalists in early November. The 2007 Walter Camp Player of the Year recipient, which is voted on by the 119 NCAA Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors, will be announced on the ESPN/Home Depot College Football Awards Show in December. The winner will then receive his trophy at the Foundation's annual national awards banquet on January 12, 2008 at the Yale University Commons in New Haven.
"We are proud to continue the great work of Walter Camp and recognize the best college football players in the nation," Foundation president John Barbarotta said. "This watch list is a great start to what is shaping up to be another exciting year of college football."
Last year's recipient was Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith.
McRae is the only Mid-American Conference player named to the Walter Camp Foundation's watch list.
