InfoCision Stadium is slated to open September 12, 2009 The University of Akron is moving forward in construction of its new on-campus stadium. InfoCision Stadium and Summa Field, scheduled to be completed in time for the Zips' 2009 football home opener against Kentucky, will have its official groundbreaking at an invitation-only ceremony on April 4.
The new stadium, which will replace the venerable, and municipally-owned, Rubber Bowl which the Zips have called home since 1940, is being financed by a combination $30 million fund-raising campaign and bonds financed by stadium revenue. A significant portion of the needed funds have already been pledged.
Capacity for InfoCision Stadium will be 30,000 and include 172 open-air loge seats; 486 club level seats and fifteen private suites. The new facility will also include a state-of-the-art video scoreboard with video screen and will house academic classrooms and labs.
The groundbreaking ceremony will be attended by Akron athletic director, Mack Rhoades, school president Dr. Louis Proenza, members of the Board of Trustees as well as InfoCision CEO Gary Taylor and Tom Strauss, president of Summa Health System.
A public reception is planned for 1:00 pm at the Louis and Freda Stile Athletics Facility after the formal groundbreaking ceremony.
