Ball State wide receiver Dante Love, who suffered a cervical spine fracture in Saturday's game at Indiana, is expected to make a full recovery following a rehabilitation period but his playing career appears to be over.
Love underwent a five-hour surgical procedure early Sunday morning to stabilize his spine and, after a rehabilitation period, "is expected to be able to lead a normal and healthy life" according to a statement released through Ball State Athletics. However Love's "football playing career is expected to be over," according to the official statement which was posted on Ball State's athletic website.
Love, who was the nation's leading pass receiver entering the Cardinals' contest against Indiana Saturday night, was injured early in the second quarter after catching a two-yard pass from quarterback Nate Davis when he was hit by Hoosiers' cornerback Chris Adkins. Love fumbled the ball after the hit and Indiana's Nick Polk returned the fumble for a touchdown. Ball State went on to win the contest, 42-20.
The senior wide receiver briefly lost consciousness after the hit and temporarily lost feeling in his legs but currently has feeling and movement in all of his extremities and appears to have not suffered any paralysis from the injury.
