BG QB Tyler Sheehan passed for 287 yards and two TD's LARAMIE, Wyo. — Bowling Green’s defense made its statement early and often, forcing five turnovers resulting in 31 points, in a 45-17 thrashing of Wyoming.
The win evened BG’s record at 2-2 in its final non-conference game of the regular season.
“We were struggling early in the first quarter trying to figure out how to move it, mix things up ... We took advantage of turnovers, definitely,” BG head coach Gregg Brandon said.
After the Falcons offense stalled inside the 5-yard line on the first possession of the game, BG’s defense made its presence felt as defensive tackle Michael Ream intercepted a Dax Crum screen pass. Ream fumbled the ball at about the 2-yard line heading into the end zone, but teammate Cody Basler, fell on the ball in the end zone. It was BG’s first defensive touchdown of the season.
“He had a good game,” Brandon said about Basler, who finished with six tackles filling in for Erique Dozier who was bothered by a sprained ankle. “He got a lot of quality reps (repetitions) during the bye week and deserved to start and did a nice job for us today.”
After the first score, the Falcons were basically in control the rest of the way and thanks to a TD and a field goal in the final minute of the first half took a 24-10 lead into the locker room.
Wyoming had pulled to within 14-10 with 4:04 left in the first half, but BG’s Tyler Sheehan and Corey Partridge hooked up on a 34-yard screen play for a touchdown. The Cowboys fumbled on the first play of the ensuing possession and BG closed the half with a 44-yard field goal from Sinisa Vrvilo.
Interceptions by Basler and Kenny Lewis set up two third-quarter touchdowns for the Falcons.
After Basler’s pick, BG scored quickly as Sheehan hit Marques Parks with two straight passes covering a total of 41 yards, with the TD coming on a 20-yard completion.
Lewis’ interception came in the end zone. Then BG went 80 yards for another score, helped in part by a roughing the punter penalty after the Falcons had stalled. Partridge had a 38-yard pass reception on the drive and Chris Bullock scored on a 6-yard run to make it 38-10 with 6:14 left in the third quarter.
Jerett Sanderson picked off BG’s fourth pass of the game and after a 41-yard return, the Falcons took advantage of a short field. BG went 22 yards in four plays with Bullock getting his second TD of the game on another 6-yard run with 11:12 left to play.
Wyoming scored in the final minute of the game to account for the final margin as the Falcons were using their second-team defenders.
“For us to come in here and win a game convincingly like this on the road at this time of the year coming off a tough Boise game (a 20-7 loss) and a bye week with a bunch of guys beat up ... I think our seniors stepped up and did a great job,” Brandon said. “We took care of the football. We did the things we talked about in the bye week that we needed to do and that’s encouraging that kids are buying in and they understand why we win games. That’s the big thing.”
Sheehan finished with 287 yards passing and two touchdowns. He also ran for a 38-yard score in the second quarter. Parks had five receptions for 76 yards and Partridge pulled in four passes for 72 yards, with each scoring a TD.
Bullock rushed for 61 yards and two scores on 18 carries and Willie Geter rushed for 61 yards on 11 carries.
