Miaim point guard Kenny Hayes OXFORD, Ohio — Miami RedHawks' senior guard Kenny Hayes will undergo surgery on Jan. 7 for an injury sustained to his right wrist in a game on Dec. 6 against Northwestern State and will be out indefinitely.
"It is certainly difficult to lose one of your starters and best all-around players for even one game, but you hope that other players step up to the challenge to help fill the void while he attends to his injury,” said Miami head coach Charlie Coles. “Our goal is always to get better as a team each day and to be playing our best basketball by the end of the season. That goal is no different. While Kenny is healing, we expect him to still be a vital member of this program in whatever ways he is able to contribute to the goals of our team.”
Hayes sat out the Dec. 11 UW-Milwaukee game after the injury but started and played 20 minutes against Valparaiso on Dec. 13. He scored no points and attempted just two shots against the Crusaders but dished out four assists and had one steal. Hayes then sat out Miami’s Dec. 20 game at West Virginia.
A 2008 Honorable Mention All-Mid-American Conference selection, Hayes averaged 13.9 points per game and 3.75 assist per game for the RedHawks this season while playing an average of 31.1 minutes per game. He tied a Miami single-game 3-point field goal record in the RedHawks’ season opener, going 7-for-7 from 3-point range against Weber State, amassing 24 points. He was tabbed the MAC East Division Player of the Week on Dec. 1 and ranks among MAC statistical leaders in eight categories this season.
Hayes has played in eight of the RedHawks’ games in 2008-09.
