Head coach Charles Ramsey's Eagles snapped an 8-game losing streak
BOWLING GREEN, OH - The six-game winning streak for Bowling Green was buried Sunday and Eastern Michigan dug the grave.
The Eagles led from the start and even though the Falcons showed some passion, determination and urgency in the final 10 minutes of the game, EMU prevailed 65-57.
“We didn’t come to play, bottom line,” said BG senior Nate Miller, who finished with a game-high 18 points. “Six-game winning streak, at home in front of one of the biggest crowds of the season, and we didn’t come to play. To Eastern Michigan’s credit, they played hard and stuck to their game plan. Eastern Michigan was a hungry team out there tonight.”
Louis Orr, BG’s second-year head coach, was upset how his team performed, especially coming off a victory on the road Thursday against arch-rival Toledo.
“We’ve done some really good things up until tonight,” Orr said. “I’m disappointed because I don’t know if we understood that there is still more work to do. Sometimes you don’t understand that until you get hurt by it. We didn’t compete at the level that every game takes to win. I just didn’t like how we played the game."
The Falcons never led as the Eagles got off to a quick start, grabbing a 12-3 lead just over seven minutes into the first half. BG trailed 25-15 at the break, shooting only 26.1 percent from the field (6-of-23) while EMU made 5-of-8 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes.
“Even BG being a veteran club, they were kind of shell-shocked,” EMU head coach Charles Ramsey said about the quick start.
In the second half, the Eagles were up 43-30 with 10:26 left before the Falcons started to show some life. BG went to a press, forcing four turnovers in a three-minute span, to get back into the game.
A 3-pointer by Darryl Clements cut the EMU lead to 50-47 with 3:32 left.
However, L.J. Frazier answered with a 3-pointer and the Falcons would get no closer than four points the rest of the way.
The second of Miller's back-to-back 3-pointers made it 59-55 with 57.7 seconds left. Joe Jakubowski’s two free throws with 37.4 seconds left again cut EMU’s lead to 61-57, but the Falcons did not score again.
Brandon Bowdry scored seven of his 15 points in the final two minutes of the game and the Eagles were 9-of-12 from the free-throw line in the final 1:13 to help seal the win.
“I was so proud. It got to be a three-point game and our kids responded,” Ramsey said. “We rebounded, we defended, we came up with big stops when we needed them and we came up big buckets when we needed them.”
NOTES: BG is 14-10 overall and 7-4 in the Mid-American Conference heading into the final five games of the season against the MAC East .... BG plays at Buffalo Wednesday with tipoff at 7 p.m. ... EMU is 4-21, 2-9, with only two wins over Division I teams.
