SPRINGFIELD, MO. – A strong board game and good free throw shooting helped the Citadel post a 63-56 victory over Eastern Michigan Friday in a Hispanic College Fund Challenge game at the JQH Arena.
Both teams made 21 field goals, including five treys apiece. The Bulldogs, however, enjoyed an important advantage around the boards with 32 rebounds to EMU’s 26. Eleven of the Citadel’s caroms were off the offensive glass.

Free throws, meanwhile, provided 16 points for the Bulldogs, who made 80 percent of their shots from the stripe. Eastern Michigan (1-1)converted 9 of 13 attempts (69.2 percent) from the line.

Cameron Well’s bucket at 7:19 of the first half gave the Citadel a nine-point lead (23-14).

Eastern Michigan responded with an 8-0 run. Wells added a free throw and basket following a steal. That left the Eagles down 26-22 at the break.

The Citadel continued to lead through much of the second half, but EMU took a brief lead with just under five minutes left when Antonio Green hit a jumper and added a added a free throw to make it 52-50.

Cameron Wells put the Bulldogs back on top with a basket at 2:46 and then added a trey at 2:02. His free throw 34 seconds later gave the Citadel a 58-52 lead.

Justin Dobbins scored on two layups down the stretch for Eastern Michigan, but Cameron Wells kept the Eagles out of reach by converting five of six free throws over the final 40 seconds.

Brandon Bowdry scored 14 points to lead EMU scorers. Dobbins (12), Higgins (10) and Carlos Medlock were also in double figures.
Wells hit 10 of 12 free throws while scoring 24 points to lead the Citadel. Joe Wolfinger (14) and Zach Urbanus (12) also hit double figures.

Eastern Michigan returns to the court Saturday for another game in the Hispanic College Fund Challenge. Maryland-Eastern Shore will provide the competition.
