AKRON 63, DRAKE 59
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Zips came from behind in the second half to register their first win of 2009-10. Anthony Hitchens keyed the second half surge with all 17 of his game points in a 63-59 win over Drake at the Glenn Wilkes Classic at the Ocean Center.

Drake held its final lead of the game at 58-57 when Seth Vandeest made a free throw at 2:22.

Hitchens responded with a trey and Darryl Robberts added a basket to put the Zips up 62-58 with 31 seconds remaining.

Brett McClanahan was the only other Akron player in double figures. He scored 12 points – all on treys – as he hit four of eight from behind the arc.

Ryan Wedel was the only Drake player in double figures. He had 14 points.
Akron shot 46.9 percent from the field, while the Bulldogs connected on 41.7 percent.
The Zips out-rebounded Drake 32-27 and had a 13-6 advantage in second chance points.

BALL STATE 57, SIU EDWARDSVILLE 47

MUNCIE, Ind. – Six straight points by Jarrod Jones in the second half erased a four-point Cougars lead and the Ball State Cardinals went on to defeat SIU-Edwardsville 57-47 Saturday at Worthen Arena.

Jones, a 6-9 sophomore forward, hit 7 of 10 shots from the field and made 5 of 9 at the line as he scored 19 points. He also had 19 points in the Cardinals opening win over Valparaiso.

Juawan Scaife was also in double figures as he tallied 12 points – nine of which came at the free throw line.

David Boarden was the only Bulldog to reach double figures. He had 14 points. Mark Yelovich had nine points and 11 rebounds.

The visitors connected on 18 of 47 (38.3 percent) shots from the field, while Ball State made 17 of 51. However the hosts enjoyed a big advantage at the foul line, where the Cardinals hit 19 of 30 attempts. SIU Edwardsville got to the line for just nine shots and made five.

Ball State also out-rebounded the Bulldogs, 40-32.

BUFFALO 78, TOWSON 69 (OT)
TOWSON, Md. – Troy Franklin’s three-point shot forced overtime, but Buffalo outscored the hosts 13-4 in the extra period as the Bulls raised their record to 2-1 with a 78-69 victory Saturday at the Towson Center.

Franklin’s 17 points paced Towson, which built a 33-27 halftime lead. Jarrel Smith had 16 points and Calvin Lee contributed 15 points and nine rebounds.

A Rodney Pierce jumper at 18:10 of the second half gave Buffalo the lead, and the Bulls never trailed again, although there were four ties – including the 65-65 tie at the end of regulation.

Pierce had 18 points to lead the Bulls. Calvin Betts had 14 points and 10 rebounds. Others in double figures were Mitchell Watt (12) and Jawann Alston 11.
Buffalo shot 46.3 percent from the field for the game and made four of five shots in overtime. Towson hit at a 38.5 percent clip overall and failed to make any field goals in the overtime period.

EASTERN MICHIGAN 76, MARYLAND –EASTERN SHORE 51
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Antonio Green’s three-pointer at 6:07 of the first half broke a 20-20 tie, and EMU took advantage of poor Maryland – Eastern Shore shooting to post a 76-51 win in the second round of the Hispanic College Fund Challenge at Missouri State University.

Buffalo led by just six at the half, but the Bulls quickly pulled away as UMES struggled with its shooting A dunk by Justin Dobbins at 11:25 gave Eastern Michigan a 16-point lead, and the Eagles cruised to victory. Brandon Bowdry’s bucket at 5:25 gave the Eagles their largest lead (29 points) at 74-45.

Eastern Michigan hit 28 of 56 from the field for the game, while the Hawks connected on just 18 of 54 (31 percent). Maryland-Eastern Shore sank just 8 of 32 (25 percent) from the floor in the second half.

Eastern Michigan, which out-rebounded UMES 42-32, was particularly effective in close as it outscored the Hawks 34-22 in the paint.

Dobbins paced the winners with 19 points. Junior forward Brandon Bowdry pitched in 14, giving him double digit scoring in each of the first three EMU contests. Jay Higgins was also in double figures as he scored 11 points.

UMES failed to put a player in double figures. Kevin White and Mark Robertson led Hawks scoring with eight apiece.
Eastern Michigan finishes its HCF Challenge Sunday against host Missouri State University.

FARLEIGH DICKENSON 62, CENTRAL MICHIGAN 53
HACKENSACK, N.J. – Fairleigh Dickenson’s 34-13 advantage at the free throw line helped the hosts down Central Michigan 62-54 Saturday at Stratis Arena.

Alvin Mofunanya’s bucket at 14:35 gave the  Knights the lead and they never trailed after that. The 6-8 senior scored 22 points, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked six shots as FDU picked up its first win of 2009-10. Sean Baptiste added 18 points for the winning Knights.

Fairleigh Dickinson outscored Central Michigan 16-4 in points off turnovers while building up a 35-23 halftime lead.

Robbie Harman’s trey at 7:04 pulled the Chippewas to within five points at 45-40, but FDU pushed the margin back to 13 at 58-45 after two free throws by Mike Scott at 1:09.

Fairleigh Dickinson shot 38.1 percent from the field (16 for 42) for the game, while Central Michigan connected on 32.3 (20 of 62)
