ImageOhio University remained perfect on the season and Western Michigan fell in a hard-fought game in MAC-related basketball action Monday.

OHIO 71, LAMAR 46.
ATHENS, Oh. – Ohio scored 17 points off Cardinals turnovers and held the visitors to 25 percent from the floor as the Bobcats blasted Lamar 71-46 Monday at the Convocation Center.

Lamar (2-3) made just 16 of 63 shots, while the Bobcats connected on 24 of 59 and added 20 points at the line while running the Ohio record to 4-0.

A pair of free throws by Tommy Freeman broke a 19-all tie, and the Bobcats held a slim 24-23 advantage at halftime. Midway through the second period the hosts went on a 22-7 run to break the game open. DeVaughn Washington’s basket with 5:08 remaining put Ohio up 60-39.

“We really fought through the first half and just kind of hung in there,” Ohio coach John Groce said. “I though that Reggie (Keely) have us a big boost in the first half when we weren’t making perimeter jump shots. He gave us some one to go to on the block…. It was really important in the first half when the score was nip-and-tuck and we were struggling to make perimeter jump shots.”

D.J. Cooper led all scorers with 16 points. He also had five assists, three steals and two blocks in the romp. Jay Kinney and Reggie Keely contributed 12 apiece for the Bobcats, while Steven Coleman added 10 points.

Center Kenneth van Kempen had just four points but pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.

“Tonight he really impacted the game,” Groce said. “It’s like night and day from last year in terms of watching his energy level and his ability to move around. I’m thrilled for him because of how much he sacrificed last spring, starting with his diet and his exercise regimen and everything he did during the summer when no one was looking. He’s completely different (now) because of his conditioning.”
Charlie Harper hit 4 of 8 while scoring 11 points to lead the Cardinals.

LOYOLA OF CHICAGO 60, WESTERN MICHIGAN 58
CHICAGO, Ill. – Free throws proved to be the difference as Loyola of Chicago came from behind in the second half defeat Western Michigan 60-58 Monday at the Joseph J. Gentile Center.

The Broncos connected on 24 of 57 (42.1 percent) field goal attempts, while Loyola made 21 of 62 (33.9 percent). However, the Ramblers were able to convert 11 of 14 free throw attempts. The visitors were good on one of just two attempts.

David Kool led all scorers with 22 points. He made 9 of 15 from the field, including 3 of 7 from behind the arc and also had the Bronco’s lone point from the line.
Martelle McLemore was the only other WMU player in double figures. He had 15 points, all on treys as he it a career-high five three-pointers.

Guard Terrence Hill led the way for Loyola with 16 points, including a 6-for-6 night at the line. Walt Gibler came off the bench to score 14 points and Andy Polka tallied 10 points.
The Broncos (1-2) jumped out to a 7-0 lead and went into halftime holding a 24-21 advantage.

Western Michigan’s lead expanded to 10 points, before Loyola began to work its way back.

“They were putting it to us,” Ramblers head coach Jim Whitesell said. “We fought really hard, but we just got frustrated offensively. Some of the shots that we’ve been making didn’t fall for us.”

The game was tied at 49-all when Gibler was fouled while making a layup. He converted the free throw, and Andy Polka put Loyola up 54-49 with a basket at the 1:15 mark.

A jumper by Kool and McLemore’s trey with 32 seconds left brought the Broncos to within two points at 56-54.

Polka’s two free throws made it a four-point game, but Kool responded with a layup with eight seconds remaining.

Courtney Stanley’s layup with five second left iced the game for Loyola (3-1). Kool finished off his 22-point night with a jumper at the buzzer.

“Western Michigan is certainly going to be very, very good this season,” Whitesell said. “They’re athletic and they’re tough, and they’re well-coached. I knew for us it was going to be a very tough game to win.”
