KENT, OH — The NCAA has formally approved Kent State’s waiver for a sixth year of eligibility for running back Eugene Jarvis. The official word came down from Indianapolis on Friday (Feb. 12) — exactly five months to the day after the Pittsburgh native suffered a season-ending injury at Boston College.
A series of mitigating circumstances prevented Jarvis from playing as a true freshman; the details of which are protected under the Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA).
“It’s tough to put into words how I feel right now,” Jarvis said. “God is good, and I’m so blessed and thankful to have received the news Friday. I’m so grateful to everyone who made this happen and I can’t wait to get back out on the field with my teammates.”
In 2007, Jarvis set the school season record with 1,669 yards rushing en route to earning honorable mention All-America honors from SI.com and CollegeFootballNews.com in addition to a first team All-MAC nod. His 3,426 career rushing yards rank fourth in school history (Astron Whatley, 3,989) and are second among active Football Bowl Subdivision players heading into 2010 (Harvey Unga, BYU - 3,455). The owner of 17 career 100-yard rushing games, Jarvis also ranks among the school career leaders in rushing attempts (3rd, 666), all-purpose yards (3rd, 4,315), total touchdowns (7th, 27), rushing touchdowns (8th, 23) and points (9th, 164).
“I can’t tell you how much this means to Eugene and to our program,” Kent State head coach Doug Martin said. “I would like to thank everyone in our department who worked extremely hard to get this done. I would also like to commend the staff at the NCAA for their commitment to making student-athlete welfare their top priority.”
Kent State wrapped up the 2009 campaign with a 5-7 overall mark and a 4-4 record in the MAC, finishing .500 or better in the conference for the third time in six seasons under head coach Doug Martin and for just the fifth time in the last 22 years. The Golden Flashes, who will have to replace three starters on offense and four from defense, are scheduled to open the 2010 campaign in Dix Stadium against Murray State Thursday, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. |
