Kent State's Chris Singletary and Ball State's Randy Davis earned Mid-American Conference Player of the Week honors for last week, according to a league announcement Monday (Feb. 22).
Kent State senior guard Chris Singletary picked up his fourth Mid-American Conference East Division Player of the Week award this season as he was honored for the third time in four weeks on Monday/
Singletary averaged 14.0 points, 7.0 assists and 6.5 rebounds as he led Kent State to wins over Ohio and Western Carolina last week. In the 74-67 Ohio victory on Wednesday he posted his second double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds to go along with five assists. Singletary scored 12 of his points in the second half as Kent State erased an eight-point deficit with 11 minutes remaining.
The win gave the Golden Flashes their 10th league win for the 12th consecutive year joining them with Kansas and Gonzaga as the only three teams to have such a streak.
Singletary was at it again Saturday in a 74-72 victory over Western Carolina in a BracketBuster contest. In just 12 minutes of play in the second half, the 6’4” KSU senior guard scored seven of his 11 points and handed out six of his nine assists. His three-pointer with 2:27 left put KSU ahead for good and helped give the program its fifth straight BracketBuster win.
Saturday’s victory gave the Golden Flashes a 20-win season in 11 of the last 12 years joining a group of just 10 teams in the country to have accomplished the feat.
Singletary’s four POW honors equal Al Fisher (2007-08) for the most in a single season by a KSU player.
The honor marks the fifth time in the last six weeks that the Golden Flashes have had a player recognized.
Davis, meanwhile, picked up his first POTW honors. He becomes just the second Cardinal to earn the weekly honor this season, joining classmate Jarrod Jones who picked up the award twice.
Davis led Ball State into sole possession of first place in the MAC West Division last week as he scored a career-high 24 points, grabbed five rebounds and handed out five assists in the Cardinals' showdown with divisional rival Central Michigan. He connected on 8-of-13 from the field, 3-of-5 from three-point land and 5-of-6 from the free throw line in the battle of first place teams as Ball State earned a 69-63 victory.
Davis followed that performance with 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists as the Cardinals ran their winning streak to three straight with a 68-52 victory over Tennessee-Martin in the ESPNU BracketBusters event.
Davis, who only scored 66 points in the Cardinals' first 12 non-conference games, leads Ball State in scoring in MAC play as he is averaging 12.2 points per game (158 points). He has scored in double figures in eight out of his last nine games, including scoring 20 or more points in his past two MAC contests.
