AKRON – The University of Akron announced its 2010 football schedule today, featuring six home games and a Homecoming date set for Oct. 2. This marks the second year in a row Akron will play six home games, and just the fourth time since 2000.

“I, my staff and our team are very excited to open the 2010 schedule at home and having a quality opponent from a BCS school like Syracuse," first-year head coach Rob Ianello said.  "We are equally excited to be playing our first two games of the year at InfoCision Stadium-Summa Field.  The Kentucky-Indiana swing will also be exciting for our players and fans, competing in SEC and Big Ten venues."

The Zips open play with Big East foe Syracuse on Sept. 4 at InfoCision Stadium-Summa Field. Akron will stay at home the following week (Sept. 11) to host Gardner-Webb. The Zips then will hit the road for back-to-back road games, traveling to Southeastern Conference member Kentucky Sept. 18 and a return trip to Big Ten member Indiana (Sept. 25).

In four of the five weekends in October, Akron will play in the state of Ohio . First, on Oct. 2, Akron will welcome Northern Illinois , along with the UA alumni, to campus for Homecoming. It will be the Huskies first trip to Akron since a thrilling 48-42 Zips’ win over NIU to help spur Akron to a MAC Championship. (It was that win that gave Akron the tie-breaker for the East Division title.)

The Zips hit the road Oct. 9 and 16, visiting rivals Kent State and Ohio . Akron returns to InfoCision Stadium-Summa Field Oct. 23 to host Western Michigan .

“The month of October will be great for our players and fans too, playing four times in the state of Ohio." Ianello said.

After staying close to home, Akron will nearly hit the MAC extremities on Oct. 30 and Nov. 6, traveling to Temple first and then to Ball State, UA’s first trip to Muncie since 2005.

Akron will have 11 days off after the Ball State game, closing the season with two home games. The Zips will host Miami ( Ohio ) on Nov. 17 (Wednesday) before an ESPN2 or ESPNU national television audience. Then, for the fifth time in six years, UA fans will get to enjoy Thanksgiving with the family and see an Akron home game, hosting Buffalo in the regular-season finale on Nov. 26 (Friday) with either ESPNU or ESPN360 broadcasting the game.

"We look forward to showcasing our program on nationally television Nov. 17 versus Miami and hopefully our team will be in position to get the national game the following week versus Buffalo ,” Ianello said.
