Well, the regular season hardwood dust has finally settled, and it’s time for the 2010 FirstEnergy MAC Men’s Basketball Tournament. Nearly four months after MAC teams opened their seasons, all 12 squads are now on notice – Win or Else!!
For at least the eight teams involved in Sunday’s opening round play, “or Else” means dropping the basketballs and picking up the remotes. Skilled as they may be individually, they’ll be joining the rest of us in front of televisions during “March Madness.”
Seniors are the ones who really “get it” in these situations. They know tournament time is prime time for ReMo the Reality Monster.
I’m told he’s distant cousin to the Grim Reaper, but instead of carrying a scythe, ReMo wields a “carnival hammer” – the one they use to test your strength. Suffice it to say, it is a formidable weapon in the hands of a pro, especially when reality is skilled in sneaking up on people. ReMO often gets a clean shot on his victims who swear they “never saw it coming.”
It is, of course, tournament week for a number of conferences. As each game comes to a close, ReMo will be in the house. He specializes in seniors, because he can give many of them a double dose of reality – no more basketball; no more school daze. Get your stuff. You’re going to work – if you can find work!
In economic times such as we live in these days, the Reality Monster is a busy guy. But even when others can’t give you time, ReMo ALWAYS finds the time. He’s a 24-7-365 kind of guy who can really dish it out.
It’s hard to say which reality is worse – losing a tournament game at the buzzer or going down in a lopsided loss. I guess in the latter case, at least you have a little longer to deal with it.
When you’re watching basketball in the coming weeks, be mindful of the seniors. As much as they prepare for victory, defeat comes hard – especially when it turns out to be their final game. And if you should see a tear, remember, ReMo's hammer packs a powerful blow.
