KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Western Michigan football held its second scrimmage of the spring season at Waldo Stadium on Saturday morning. The Broncos made plays on both sides of the ball with the defense starting things off with a pick-six and the offense rushing the ball for four touchdowns.
Lewis Toler and the Bronco defense set the tone very early in the scrimmage, picking off Alex Carder inside the 10-yard line and running it back untouched for the score. Carder settled down, throwing for 122 yards and a 22-yard TD to Ansel Ponder on 11-for-23 passing. Drew Burdi racked up 162 yards on 13-of-22 passing, but did throw two interceptions.
John Rice was the recipient of the first Burdi interception on a tipped ball in the end zone. Josh Price hauled in the second pick to end the scrimmage. The Bronco defense also forced and recovered a fumble midway through the session when Deshon Lawrence stripped Robert Arnheim and Doug Wiggins recovered.
Winchester carried the ball 13 times for 91 yards and a pair of scores, both coming from 19 yards out. The first came on the third play of the red zone period and the second came on the fifth play of the third red zone drive. Brian Fields and Antoin Scriven each scored on the ground. Scriven's came from eight yards out, while Fields rumbled in from 31 yards out.
Dervon Wallace led all receivers with five catches for 74 yards. Ponder added three catches for 28 yards, including the 22-yard score. Jamelle Murray had three catches for 60 yards, including a 29-yard grab. Wallace had the longest catch on Saturday, hauling in a 42-yard catch from Burdi.
The Broncos had four red zone drives with three of the four resulting in rushing TDs. The second drive ended with Rice's interception in the end zone. After red zone session came the two-minute drill, Carder took the offense down the field from the 25 yard-line in 11 plays with Winchester capping the drive with a one-yard score. Carder hit Blake Hammond for 14 yards, Arnheim for 14 yards and Murray for 20 yards while also running the ball once for 15 yards and first down.
Burdi opened the second two-minute drive with a 20-yard strike to Wallace and then a four-yard gain to Fields. Burdi also connected with Eric Monette for 16 yards before Price's interception.
The defense's Paul Hazel had two sacks and a tackle for a six-yard loss. Lawrence also had a pass break up to go along with his forced fumble. Mitch Zajac and Cory Sueing converged on the quarterback for a QB hurry as well. |
