AKRON, OH – University of Akron head men's basketball coach Keith Dambrot announced on Friday that Chauncey Gilliam has transferred into the program. Gilliam spent his first two seasons of eligibility at Maryland-Baltimore County and will have to sit out the 2010-11 season under NCAA transfer rules, then will be eligible to play two seasons for the Zips.

"Chauncey is a good scorer and a good athlete," Dambrot said. "He comes to us with two seasons of collegiate experience and played for one season at Brewster Academy (prep school in New Hampshire) before going to UMBC. At Brewster, he played for a very experienced coach in Jason Smith. That is the same prep school that Cedrick Middleton (former Akron guard) attended."

A 6-foot-5, 235-pound small forward from Columbia, Md., Gilliam averaged 13.3 points and 3.7 rebounds as a sophomore in 2009-10 at UMBC, which competes in the American East Conference. As a freshman in 2008-09, he averaged 10.9 points and 4.4 rebounds and was named the league's rookie of the week four times.

At Brewster Academy in 2007-08, he averaged 6.2 points as a member of a team that lost in the National Prep Championship semifinal. In 2005-06 and 2006-07 he attended Leap Academy in Camden, N.J., and in 2003-04 and 2004-05 he went to Hammond (Md.) High School.

The addition of Gilliam grows the number of newcomers on the Zips' 2010-11 roster to six. He joins 5-foot-9, 175-pound guard Alex Abreu; 6-foot-6, 195-pound forward Quincy Diggs; 6-foot-7, 200-pound forward Josh Egner; 6-foot-8, 230-pound forward Dakotah Euton and 6-foot-6, 200-pound forward Michael Green.

Abreu signed a national letter of intent in April, while Egner, Euton and Green each signed an NLI last November. Diggs is a transfer from University of New Orleans, which is dropping its Division-I status – meaning he is immediately eligible for competition as a sophomore in 2010-11.
