BOWLING GREEN, OH - Kent State won the battle up front and ultimately the game, downing Bowling Green 30-6 Saturday afternoon at Perry Stadium. The Falcons did not score an offensive touchdown and were held to 135 yards in total offense while falling to 1-7 overall and 0-4. BG has lost five straight games.
“There’s nothing magical to say after a game like that,” BG head coach Dave Clawson said. “This game, I didn’t question the effort. I didn’t question the heart.
“We didn’t run the ball very well and we didn’t protect very well,” Clawson added. “I can’t say the guys weren’t giving effort or weren’t trying. Guys at times were getting over whelmed ... They dominated us up front.”
The Falcons finished with minus 10 yards in rushing, due in part to six sacks for 38 yards in losses.
“Certainly with what Kent does on defense, with all the zone blitzing and twisting, we didn’t handle that stuff well all game,” Clawson said.
BG quarterback Matt Schilz was under pressure the entire game. He finished 18-of-35 passing for 118 yards and two interceptions to go with the six sacks.
“He was not really able to set his feet the whole game,” Clawson said about Schilz. “I’d be very surprised when we watched the film, if we dropped back and threw the ball, if there was any time that we actually had all four rushers or five rushers blocked.”
The Falcons were 3-of-16 on third down conversions, managed 11 first downs, and possessed the ball for just 25:01.
“They definitely did a great job. They had a lot of twists where they would bring guys from different places,” Schilz said. “We would get pressure, and we couldn’t make the big plays we needed to win the game.”
Meanwhile, Kent State’s offense was picking apart the Falcons as Spencer Keith was 26-of-32 passing for 223 yards and two scores. Tyshon Goode made 12 receptions for 158 yards and two TDs. Jacquise Terry gave the Golden Flashes enough of a running attack to keep BG off-balance, picking up 94 yards on 22 carries.
“Against teams that run the ball like Kent does, there is only so much two-safety, hard-corner coverage that you can play,” Clawson said. “At a certain point you have to be able to cover people and they got some matchups worked up and they did a nice job.”
Bowling Green had a chance to seize the momentum and possibly change the course of the game, early in the first quarter.
BG’s Aunre’ Davis forced a fumble after a short completed pass and Kevin Alvarado recovered at the KSU 32-yard line with 13:06 to play in the first quarter. However, BG completed a pass for no gain on first down, rushed for three yards on second down and then had two incomplete passes to end the threat.
“Those are opportunities that we can’t come away from empty-handed,” Clawson said. “There is not a lot of margin for error right now with this football team. To generate a turnover on the first series and come up empty ... The bottom line is that good teams make those plays and get those things going and right now we’re obviously struggling.”
The Falcons actually did lead in the game when Jerry ‘Boo Boo’ Gates returned a kickoff 75 yards for a TD after Kent State had taken a 3-0 lead on a field goal by Freddy Cortez.
Gates appeared to be stopped at BG’s 45-yard line, but got out of the scrum and raced to the end zone with 8:06 to play in the first quarter. The PAT attempt by redshirt freshman Kyle Burkhardt, a walk-on who won the place-kicking job in practice this week, was blocked.
Kent State scored a TD less than five minutes later to go ahead for good. With Goode’s two TD receptions and another field goal in the second quarter, Kent State was in complete control at the half, 27-6. Cortez closed out the scoring with his third field goal of the game in the third quarter.
“I feel they ran a base offense with a few trick plays here and there that got us,” BG linebacker Dwayne Woods Jr. said. Woods led the Falcons with 10 tackles.
BG NOTES Jerry ‘Boo Boo’ Gates provided the only real highlight for Bowling Green in a 30-6 loss to Kent State Saturday. Gates, a true freshman, returned a kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown. It appeared Gates was stopped about BG’s 45-yard line, but he emerged from a big pile-up and raced to the end zone.
“What a great individual effort,” BG head coach Dave Clawson said. “He’s dynamic. He’s explosive.
“I always caution this with freshmen, because a lot of times you see freshmen come out their first year and make a lot of plays and be spectacular and then you never see them again.
“If he embraces the process and he does what’s right, I think we have a guy that’s going to be an outstanding football player for us,” Clawson added. “He’s obviously got a high skill level and a very high ceiling for what he can be as a player.”
Gates also had five tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
SILVER LINING: Clawson thinks his defense has a chance to be good in the near future.
“In games like this and in seasons like this you look for the silver lining. And the silver lining is that we have a lot of good, young defensive players that are playing a lot of football for us,” Clawson said. “Their day is going to come.
“I see the makings of a very good defense for us.”
HURTING: BG’s offensive line and defensive secondary continue to be in a state of flux. Veteran Ben Bojicic, the team’s center and a team captain, had to leave the game with an injured right shoulder. He was replaced by Nick Torresso, a converted defensive lineman.
On defense, Adrien Spencer and Aunre’ Davis, a redshirt freshman, started in at the corners. When safety Keith Morgan had to leave the game, true freshman Aaron Foster replaced him.
Clawson said his team is thread bare on both the offensive line and in the secondary.
“It’s a thin team that got even thinner,” Clawson said. “We’re just asking guys to play really before they are ready and I think he showed up in those two areas.
“We let the ball (go) over our heads in the secondary and we really struggled up front in the offensive line,” Clawson said. “It started out bad and when we lost Ben Bojicic, it became tougher.”
SOME BG FIRSTS: Erique Geiger got the first three carries of his career.
Shaun Joplin, a walk-on, caught his first pass for an 11-yard gain in the fourth quarter. He was also on the punt return team.
Both Geiger and Joplin are redshirt freshmen.
Scott Lewis, a redshirt junior, saw action at left guard after missing the first eight games of the season with a broken foot.
NEXT: Bowling Green plays at Central Michigan this Saturday with kickoff at 3:30 p.m.
“Somehow, someway we’ve got to find a way to regroup and get these guys playing together and figure out something,” Clawson said.
