The Mid-American Conference Monday announced its Week 8 MAC Players of the Week.
East Division
Offensive Player of the Week: Kent State WR Tyshon Goode
Sophomore wide receiver Tyshon Goode (Syracuse, N.Y.) hauled in a career-high 12 catches for a season-high 158 yards and two touchdowns in a 30-6 win at Bowling Green. Goode’s 38-yard grab in the first quarter set the Flashes up with first-and-goal at the two and led to the go-ahead TD two plays later. He then went on to catch a three-yard fade in the end zone and a 28-yard scoring strike in the second quarter as Kent State extended its advantage to 27-6 at halftime. The performance also extended his consecutive games with a catch streak to 15.
Defensive Player of the Week: Temple DT Muhammad Wilkerson
Junior defensive tackle Muhammad Wilkerson (Linden, N.J.) led the Owls with six tackles and a career-high 2.5 sacks in a 42-0 win at Buffalo. Wilkerson was part of a defensive effort that featured the programs first shutout since 1992 and first shutout of a BCS opponent since 1984. The 42-point win was the largest margin of victory for Temple in a MAC game. A starter in all eight games, Wilkerson is third with 51 tackles while posting a team-best 8.5 TFL, a team-best 7.0 sacks, two forced fumbles and two break-ups.
Special Teams Player of the Week: Kent State K Freddy Cortez
Sophomore kicker Freddy Cortez (Fort Meade, Fla.) was responsible for 12 of Kent State's 30 points in a 30-6 victory at Bowling Green. Cortez tied his career-high with three field goals (29, 32, 30), while banging in all three extra points. His only miss of the day came on a 51-yard attempt that was just wide left.
West Division
Offensive Player of the Week: Western Michigan WR Juan Nunez
Senior wide receiver Juan Nunez (Miami, Fla.) collected six receptions for a career high 192 yards and three touchdowns. The yardage total is the fifth most in a single-game in Western Michigan history and his three touchdowns are tied with five other Broncos for the second most in a game in program history. Nunez's three scores all came in the first half for 36, 59 and 34 yards, respectively.
Defensive Player of the Week: Northern Illinois LB Tyrone Clark
Sophomore linebacker Tyrone Clark (St. Louis, Mo.) picked off two passes in Northern Illinois 33-7 win over Central Michigan. Clark’s two interceptions came in the second quarter – both coming off of tipped balls – to stop Chippewa drives and ensure that the Huskies would have a halftime lead. His first interception came off a screen pass at the Central Michigan 37-yard line as Sean Progar tipped the ball at the line of scrimmage and Clark grabbed it and returned it three yards. Following the interception, Northern Illinois drove to the Central Michigan 7 and hit a 24-yard field goal with 2:44 left in the half and would not trail again in the game. On the Chippewas’ next possession, Clark tipped a pass to himself and picked it off at the Northern Illinois 26-yard line to stop Central Michigan from scoring prior to the half.
Special Teams Player of the Week: Toledo KR Isaiah Ballard
Junior kickoff return specialist Isaiah Ballard (Toledo, Ohio) returned three kickoffs for 103 yards, including a 56-yard return, in a 31-24 win over Ball State. Ballard’s 56 yard return opened the second half and set up Toledo’s go ahead touchdown. |
