The Mid-American Conference has announced its Players of the Week for Week 13 of the 2010 football season.
East Division
Offensive Player of the Week: Miami RB Thomas Merriweather
Senior running back Thomas Merriweather (Flourissant, Mo.) rushed for a career-high 182 yards on 22 carries (8.3 avg.) and one touchdown in Miami’s 23-3 victory over Temple on Tuesday night. Merriweather had a 96 yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to secure the victory and it tied for the second-longest run in Miami history. His 182 yard performance was his third 100-yard rushing game of the season and fourth of his career.
Defensive Player of the Week: Kent State LB Cobrani Mixon
Senior linebacker Cobrani Mixon (Cincinnati, Ohio) had an impressive all-around performance as the Flashes held Ohio without an offensive touchdown for the second year in a row in a 28-6 win. Mixon tallied eight tackles, one sack, one and one-half tackles for loss, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, two pass break-ups and a hurry in his final game. His sack came in the first quarter when his hit on Boo Jackson in the end zone forced a fumble that was recovered for a touchdown. In the fourth quarter, he fell on a Jackson fumble at the Ohio 16 that led to the game's final touchdown just two plays later.
Special Teams Player of the Week: Ohio P Paul Hershey
Junior punter Paul Hershey (Freemont, Ohio) averaged 46.7 yards per punt on three kicks last Friday at Kent State in a 28-6 setback. Hershey also had a long punt of 61 yards.
West Division
Offensive Player of the Week: Toledo QB Terrance Owens
Freshman quarterback Terrance Owens (Cleveland, Ohio) completed 24-of-32 passes for a career-high 304 yards and three touchdowns to lead Toledo over Central Michigan, 42-31. Making his third career start, Owens set career highs in completions (24) and passing yards (304). Owens connected with Kenny Stafford on a 75-yard touchdown pass only 1:21 into the contest for the quickest score this season for the Rockets. Owens also caught a 28-yard touchdown pass from wide receiver Eric Page in the fourth quarter.
Defensive Player of the Week: Northern Illinois DE Jake Coffman
Senior defensive end Jake Coffman (German Valley, Ill.) finished with five solo tackles, one sack, two tackles for loss and a forced fumble as he led the way for Northern Illinois 71-3 win at Eastern Michigan. Coffman set the tone early as on the second play of Eastern Michigan’s second series, he sacked quarterback Alex Gillett for a loss of eight yards, causing a fumble which was recovered by Northern Illinois’ Sean Progar at the Eagle 22 yard line. Two plays later, the Huskies’ scored to go ahead 13-0.
Coffman and the Huskie defense held Eastern Michigan to 160 yards on 64 offensive plays for an average of 2.5 yards per play. In addition, Eastern Michigan’s 11 passing yards was a season low.
Special Teams Player of the Week: Toledo KR Eric Page
Sophomore kick returner Eric Page (Toledo, Ohio) became the first Rocket in history to return two kickoffs for touchdowns, a 99-yarder in the first quarter and a 95-yarder in the third quarter, in a 42-31 win over Central Michigan. The 99-yarder was the second-longest in Toledo history and the longest in 62 years. Page also caught twelve passes for 127 yards and added two touchdown receptions and also threw another touchdown—a 28 yard connection to quarterback Terrance Owens.
