 AKRON 75, ARKANSAS- LITTLE ROCK 61 LAS VEGAS, NV – Four Zips scored in double figures, led by senior guard Darryl Robert’s 16 points, as the University of Akron men’s basketball team defeated Arkansas-Little Rock 75-61 Tuesday at the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic.
Zeke Marshall and Brett McClanahan each chipped in 14 points, while Alex Abreu added 10. Marshall also recorded his second-career double-double by grabbing a career-high 16 boards.
For the game, Akron shot 50.0 percent from the floor (28-for-56) and 52.4 percent from 3-point range (11-for-21) while holding the Trojans to a 39.1 shooting percentage from the floor (18-for-46). The Zips held a 32-28 rebounding advantage and forced 19 UALR turnovers.
Akron opened the second half scoring the first six points to take a 52-31 lead with 18:00 to go in the game. The Zips continued to keep the pressure on, expanding their lead to as many as 20 points (67-47) in the second half.
The Zips held UALR without a field goal over the final 5:34 to close out the first game of the tournament with a 75-61 victory.
The Trojans opened the game up 11-5 with 15:20 left in the opening frame before the Zips made an 11-4 run to take their first lead,16-15, at the 11:19 media timeout. Akron extended that lead to 18-15 at the 10:38 mark.
The Akron defense then took over, holding UALR without a field goal for 8:11 to extend the lead to 30-18 with 5:08 to go before the half. The Zips kept the pressure on and close out the opening 20 minutes up 46-31.
Roberts and McClanahan led the Zips with nine points each while Abreu had eight points, including a buzzer-beater to end the half. Akron closed the half shooting 51.5 percent from the floor (17-for-33) and 56.3 percent from long distance (9-for-16) while turning the ball over just three times.
The Zips return to action Thursday when they face off against Stetson at 5:15 p.m. ET.
NOTES: Sophomore center Zeke Marshall passed Rob Preston (86, 2001-06) for fourth place on the career blocks list (87) … Marshall also recorded a career-high 16 rebounds … senior guard Darryl Roberts scored a season-high 16 points … freshman guard Alex Abreu recorded his first career block.
