KANSAS 83, MIAMI 56 No. 3 Kansas showed why it is one of America’s elite teams Sunday as it dominated action on the way to an 83-56 victory over the Miami RedHawks at Phog Allen Fieldhouse.
With the win, Kansas (13-0) remained undefeated and extended the nation’s longest homecourt winning streak to 67 games. Miami, meanwhile, fell to 5-9 on the season. Among the nine losses are setbacks against No. 1 Duke, No. 2 Ohio State, No. 3 Kansas and No. 7 San Diego State. Five Miami opponents are still undefeated as schools prepare to embark on their conference schedules.
JAYHAWK DOMINATION INSIDE
KU owned a 35-20 advantage in field goals and outscored the RedHawks 50-14 in the paint. The Jayhawks also outrebounded MU 46-17.
Thomas Robinson’s dunk shot to open the game’s scoring set the tone. Kansas hit 57.1 percent of its shots from the field in the first half with the help of seven dunks. Travis Releford and Elijah Johnson combined on one of the slams at 8:21 to start a 14-0 run that broke the game open. Releford made a steal and instead of finishing himself, tossed it off the backboard for Johnson to throw down.
Josh Selby’s trey at 5:28 capped the run, but the Jayhawks pushed their lead to 37-13 when Markieff Morris scored on a dunk at 2:45. Antonio Ballard’s layup at 2:32 was the first MU field goal since an Orlando Williams bucket at 9:11.
Miami totaled eight field goals before intermission and shot 34.8 percent. The hosts converted 20 field goals while shooting 57.1 percent.
After establishing a 47-21 lead at the break, Kansas made 15-of-26 (57.7 percent) from the field in the second half. Miami, meanwhile, raised its shooting percent to 42.9 percent, with six of its 12 field goals coming from behind the arc.
WILLIAMS, ROBERTS PACE MU SCORING
Williams, who sank 5-of-8 from the field, led MU with 11 points. Allen Roberts was the only other RedHawk player in double figures. He scored 10 points in 13 minutes of action coming off the bench. Still, the Kansas bench outscored Miami’s substitutions 44-18.
Markief Morris paced the Jayhawks, registering a double-double with 20 points (9-of-11 shooting) and 10 rebounds in 22 minutes. Twin brother Morris netted 18 points (7-of-11 shooting) and the freshman sensation Selby also scored 18. Nine JayHawks scored in the contest.
Miami will complete a three-game stretch of road games Sunday (2 p.m.) when it travels to Athens for its MAC opener against rival Ohio University.
NOTES: Forward Antonio Ballard fouled out of the contest with 9:51 remaining … Kansas’ dominance was particularly evident in the first half when it owned advantages in points off the bench (33-0), fast break points (8-0), second chance points (13-0), points off turnovers (12-0) and points in the paint (28-6) … Miami’s only lead of the game was at 3-2 after a Winbush trey … The Morris twins recently had been in KU coach Bill Self’s doghouse, but they both came to play Sunday, combining for 29 points – eight more than the Miami team - by halftime … Selby, playing in his fourth game as a Jayhawk, showed why he was one of the nation’s top recruits and the most heralded KU freshman since Danny Manning. After missing the first nine games due to an NCAA suspension related to improper benefits, Selby displayed an impressive all-around game. He scored 18 points, including four treys, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out five assists in 25 minutes.
