University of Toledo Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk has announced that 6-5, 195-pound guard Curtis Dennis is transferring to the Rockets’ program from the University of New Mexico. Dennis will become eligible to play for the Rockets following the conclusion of the Fall 2011 semester and have one-and-a-half year of eligibility remaining.
“Curtis is very mature and has been a part of an extremely successful program at New Mexico,” Kowalczyk said. “He understands what it takes to win at a high level, and we feel he can come in and be a very good basketball player for us.”
Dennis started the Lobos’ first three contests this season and tallied a season-best 12 points in 23 minutes in UNM’s season opener vs. Detroit. Dennis was averaging 2.9 ppg in 10 contests this season with his other top effort being a seven-point, three-assist effort vs. Arizona State in the Lobos’ second game.
A Bronx, NY native, Dennis averaged 2.7 points and 1.2 rebounds per contest in eight minutes per game as a redshirt freshman and scored a career-high 14 points while playing just 14 minutes in a win over nationally ranked Texas Tech.
As a senior at Blessed Sacrament-St. Gabriel High School in New Rochelle, NY, Dennis registered 18 points and eight rebounds per game. He then spent two years in prep school, averaging 24.5 ppg at Gulf Shores Academy in Houston, TX in 2006-07 before helping Findlay College Prep (Las Vegas, NV) to a 32-1 record and an appearance in the Prep School National Championship Game in 2007-08. In that season, Dennis averaged 13.0 ppg and 3.7 rpg while shooting 40.1% from three-point range and was ranked as the 13th-best prep school player in the country by Scout.com.
