BALL STATE 64, TOLEDO 58 TOLEDO, OH – Twenty-one turnovers proved to be too much for Toledo to overcome on Saturday evening as the Rockets dropped a 64-58 decision to MAC West Division leader Ball State (13-4, 5-0 MAC) in Savage Arena. The Cardinals hold a two-game lead in the West Division over Western Michigan and are the only team in the league with an unblemished record.
GRIFFIN BUSTS 20 AGAIN
Sophomore G Malcolm Griffin led UT offensively with a game-high 25 points, marking his third consecutive 20-point effort. He is the first Rocket to achieve this feat in over seven years.
Freshman G Reese Holliday and senior F Anthony Wright also were in double figures with 13 points and 10 points, respectively. Holliday also grabbed a game-high 11 boards for his fourth double-double of the season.
DAVIS LEADS BALL STATE
Junior guard Randy Davis topped the Cardinals with 24 points and was a perfect 14-of-14 from the charity stripe. Sophomore G Jauwan Scaife (13 pts.) and junior F Jarrod Jones (12 pts.) also scored in double digits.
Both teams shot similar percentages from the field with the Rockets at 40.8 percent and the Cardinals slightly better at 41.3 percent. Toledo held a 35-26 rebounding advantage but couldn’t overcome its third-highest turnover total in a game this season.
Toledo held a 27-26 halftime advantage despite committing 13 turnovers in the first half. Back-to-back treys from freshman G J.T. Thomas and Griffin gave the Rockets their largest lead of the game, 25-18, with 5:16 remaining in the opening stanza.
CARDINALS BREAK AWAY
The first 10 minutes of the second half were relatively even until the Cardinals broke free from UT with a 10-1 spurt to assume a 47-37 cushion with just over seven minutes to play. The Rockets attempted to rally but the closest they could come was 64-58 following a Wright trey with 1:03 to play.
BSU closed out the contest by making 15 of 16 free throws in the final minute and finished the evening with an 83.9 (26-of-31) free-throw percentage.
