WESTERN MICHIGAN 73, TOLEDO 60 KALAMAZOO, MI – Toledo couldn’t overcome a slow first-half start Wednesday evening as MAC West Division co-leader Western Michigan avenged its 73-60 defeat to the Rockets earlier this season with a 68-56 triumph at University Arena.
With the win, the Broncos (16-11, 8-5 MAC) remained in a first-place tie for the West Division lead with Ball State, who posted a 64-49 home victory over Eastern Michigan.
Redshirt freshman F Hayden Humes led UT offensively with 13 points and was joined in double figures by senior F Anthony Wright (11 pts.), freshman G Zack Leahy (11 pts.) and freshman C Delino Dear (10 pts.).
Junior G Demetrius Ward tallied a game-high 19 points and was one of three Broncos to score in double figures.
Toledo (4-24, 1-12 MAC) was limited to a 39.1 field-goal percentage in the contest, while Western Michigan converted 48.8 percent of its shots.
BRONCOS HOLD ENORMOUS HALFTIME LEAD
The Rockets trailed 45-16 at halftime after shooting just 23.8 percent from the field. As cold as UT was, the Broncos were red-hot with a 65.4 shooting mark in the opening stanza.
UT rallied in the second half, outscoring the Broncos 40-23, but couldn't overcome the early deficit. The Rockets were able to slice WMU’s lead to 55-41 with just under seven minutes remaining following back-to-back baskets from senior F Justin Anyijong. Humes then made it a 12-point contest, 61-49, but that was as close as the Rockets would get.
Toledo will look to regroup from this defeat when it hosts MAC West Division foe Northern Illinois on Saturday, Feb. 26 at Savage Arena. Tip-off time is set for 7:00 p.m.
