KALAMAZOO, MI - The Western Michigan football held its first scrimmage of the spring season Saturday, and despite being without some of the usual names, the Bronco offense showed some explosiveness especially in the form of Eric Monette, who had three touchdowns. The WMU defense also excited the crowd, accumulating eight sacks, with all but one coming from the defensive line.
WMU worked primarily with two quarterbacks under center. Alex Carder ran the first team and Mike Perish led the second unit. Carder, who also ran the ball seven times for 40 yards, completed 16-of-21 passes for 186 yards.
Seven of his 16 completions went for first downs and three went for touchdowns. All three of his TD passes came late in the scrimmage, with the first going to Blake Hammond from 11 yards out, and the other two from 20 yards out to Monette and Robert Arnheim.
Monette was all over the field, hauling in six grabs for 126 yards and three scores. His first was on a seam pass from 36 yards out from Perish. The second was down the far sideline on a reverse pass from Arnheim, who was the team's second leading receiver with six catches for 88 yards and the one TD.
Josh Schaffer also had a scoring grab, from 30 yards out, and finished with two catches for 43 yards. Hammond also had two receptions, including the score.
Brian Fields was busy in the backfield, carrying the ball nine times for 41 yards while also hauling in two catches for 16 yards. One of his runs sent a message to the Bronco defense as he lowered his shoulder and sent Mitch Zajac and Desmond Bozeman backward during a three-yard gain. Tevin Drake racked up 48 yards on nine carries, with 23 of those yards coming on one carry, the scrimmage's only rushing score on a great cut back in traffic.
Dareyon Chance had four carries for 55 yards, including runs of 16, 20 and 15 yards.
Defensively Manny Diaz and Andrew Sharp each had a pair of sacks. Travonte Boles blew up the line of scrimmage for a tackle for loss. Drew Nowak, Deauntay Legrier and Lewis Toler each added sacks on the day. Toler came in untouched on a corner blitz to get to Carder in the backfield.
Western Michigan will hold two more practices before its next scrimmage on Saturday, April 9.
