Image BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo men’s basketball head coach Reggie Witherspoon has signed a two-year contract extension keeping him at UB through the 2015-16 season, as announced by UB Vice President and Athletic Director Warde Manuel.

“I am pleased to be able to sign Reggie to this extension,” Manuel said. “He has been an extremely successful basketball coach both on and off the court in his development of the young men in our program. In addition to that, he has served as a tremendous ambassador for the university and the Buffalo community as well.

“Based on last year’s performance and recent additions to the team, I look forward to a bright future for our men’s basketball program,” said Manuel.

Witherspoon enters his 13th season as the head coach at UB and his 164 wins rank third in school history. He has taken a once struggling basketball team to new heights since his hire. The Bulls have won at least 17 games in six of the last eight seasons.

To put that in perspective, prior to Witherspoon’s hire, Buffalo won 17 games just nine times over the first 85 years of the program.

Witherspoon has led Buffalo to the only three 20-win seasons in school history. The Bulls had a 23-win season and NIT berth in 2005, a 21-win campaign and a spot in the 2009 College Basketball Invitational and a 20-win season and 2011 CollegeInsiders.com post season tournament appearance.

The Bulls have posted 140 wins over the last eight seasons - including victories over Rutgers, Fresno State, Miami (FL), South Florida, Tulane, Temple, Penn State and Colorado.

“I’m excited to remain a part of this program and I look forward to the challenges and opportunities going forward,” Witherspoon said. “I would like to thank Warde Manuel, University President Satish Tripathi, the administration at UB, as well as former and current student-athletes and supporters of our program for this opportunity.”

The 2011-12 season tips off on November 11 when the Bulls host Saint Peter’s at Alumni Arena. Buffalo returns 10 letterwinners, including four starters, to a team that went 20-14 last season.
