SOUTH DAKOTA STATE 82, WESTERN MICHIGAN 76
BROOKINGS, SD. - Sophomore Matt Stainbrook had a career scoring day, but the Western Michigan men's basketball team was unsuccessful in its regular season debut Saturday, falling 82-76 to the South Dakota State Jackrabbits at Frost Arena.

Stainbrook finished the game with a career-high 32 points, shooting 14-of-16 from the field. He snapped his previous single-game career-high in the first half, totaling 19 points in the opening stanza. However, the Broncos were unable to keep up with the hot-shooting Jackrabbits, as South Dakota State hit five three-pointers in the second half, compared to the Broncos' one.

The Broncos also received 16 points from Demetrius Ward and 14 points from Mike Douglas, the latter of whom also contributed five rebounds and four assists. Ward chipped in six rebounds and three steals.

The Broncos overcame a three-minute drought in the middle of the first half, taking a 22-21 lead on a layup from Stainbrook at the 7:41 mark for their first lead since the 14:25 mark of the first half. Ward grabbed a defensive rebound on the Jackrabbits' next trip down the court and dished it off to Douglas, who found Nate Hutcheson streaking down the court. Hutcheson took the pass and slammed the ball home for a three-point lead. The Broncos took their biggest lead of the day with 1:45 remaining in the first half when Douglas scored a lay-up to make it 34-28.

Ward gave the Broncos their biggest lead of the second half with a jumper at the 13:23 mark, but from there SDSU began to come back. The Jackrabbits' Nate Wolters hit a three-point shot to tie the score at 55-55, and SDSU took the lead for good when Wolters found Brayden Carlson for a three-pointer. Ward made it a one-possession game with 1:17 remaining with a pair of free throw makes, but the Jackrabbits pulled away for the win.

The Broncos will be back in action on Thursday, Nov. 18 when they face Temple in the first round of the 5-Hour ENERGY Puerto Rico Tip-Off. The game is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. ET.
