GEORGIA 63, BOWLING GREEN 54 ATHENS, GA -- Despite some erratic shooting and too many turnovers, Bowling Green was in position late in the second half to pull off an upset of Georgia Sunday evening. However, the Bulldogs held off the Falcons, 63-54 in a regional game of the CBE Classic. BG is 1-1 overall and Georgia is 2-0.
“We competed. That’s first and foremost,” BG head coach Louis Orr said. “We didn’t play great offensively, but I thought we played better in the second half.
“In the first half we were playing too fast and we didn’t execute.”
The Falcons were down 11 at the half and by as many as 16 early in the second half.
Bowling Green then rallied to pull within five points twice in the final eight minutes of the game.
Dee Brown, who had all of his team-high 15 points in the second half, scored to cut Georgia’s lead to 48-43 with 7:17 left in the game.
The Bulldogs made a 5-0 run to push their lead back to 10, 53-43, with 4:45 left.
Craig Sealey (10 points and five rebounds off the bench) hit a jumper and Brown
converted a three-point play to make it 53-48 with 2:49 remaining.
In the final minute, Brown’s jumper made it 58-52, but the Falcons could get no closer as Georgia closed things out from the free-throw line. The Bulldogs were 9-of-12 from the line in the final 1:19 of the game.
“Our defense was much better in the second half, especially in the last 10 minutes of the game,” Orr said.
The Falcons were 9-of-30 from the field in the first half and finished the game making 23-of-62 shots (37.1 percent).
“They are a very good defensive team,” Orr said about the Bulldogs. “They try to take you out of what you want to do.
“I give them credit. They make you earn what you get.”
Brown was 7-of-12 from the field in the second half on the way to his 15 points. He spent most of his time at the point-guard spot in the second half.
“Dee Brown did a great job at the point,” Orr said. “We started attacking the basket.”
Scott Thomas also scored in double figures for the Falcons with 11 points. Thomas added eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.
The Falcons did a very good job of rebounding, holding a 43-28 advantage, including 19 offensive rebounds. BG managed 16 second-chance points. A’uston Calhoun finished with a game-high 11 rebounds.
“(It was) effort and activity. We went after the ball,” Orr said about BG’s offensive rebounding. In its 63-48 win over Howard last Friday, BG had only six offensive rebounds.
“We were super active on the glass and we needed that,” Orr added. “Offensive rebounding is an effort stat.”
NOTES: Georgia scored 22 points off BG’s 17 turnovers ... Gerald Robinson led Georgia with 15 points ... BG was only 6-of-13 from the free-throw line ... BG is now idle until three straight home games (Nov. 21-23) in the CBE Classic.
