WESTERN MICHIGAN 74, TOLEDO 52 KALAMAZOO, MI – Western Michigan’s 19-4 spurt midway through the second half eliminated any hopes of a Rocket comeback in Toledo’s 74-52 defeat to the Broncos on Saturday afternoon in University Arena.
Freshman G Julius Brown topped the Rockets (8-9, 0-3 MAC) offensively with 17 points, while sophomore G Rian Pearson contributed 15 points.
Reese Holliday paced UT with seven boards, but the sophomore forward needed more help on the glass as WMU held an eye-popping 48-24 advantage in the rebounding department.
Senior F Flenard Whitfield led three Broncos in double figures with a game-high 19 points, while sophomore C Matt Stainbrook provided a double-double (13 pts., 11 reb.) for the defending MAC West Division champions.
Toledo committed a season-low 10 turnovers in the contest but struggled offensively as WMU held the Rockets to season lows in points (52), field-goal percentage (35.7), three-point FG% (15.0), free-throw percentage (52.9) and assists (5).
UT started the game well as it led for the first five minutes. WMU then scored 12 straight points for a 17-10 advantage just under the midway point of the opening stanza. The Broncos maintained that margin the remainder of the half and took a 33-21 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Toledo chipped away at its deficit early in the second half with a Holliday trey and a basket from junior G Dominique Buckley making it an eight-point contest, 41-33, with 14:45 remaining.
The Broncos answered, through, with a decisive run that resulted in a 60-37 lead with 9:04 to play.
Toledo is back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 18 when it hosts West Division foe Northern Illinois. Tip-off time is set for 7:00 p.m. in Savage Arena. WMU is at Eastern Michigan (7 p.m.) in the Convocation Center.
