While still not 100 percent healthy, Anthony Turner provided the offensive spark for Bowling Green in a 37-33 comeback win over Akron last Saturday. He rushed 19 times for 126 yards, made five receptions for 42 yards and threw a 5-yard scoring pass to Jimmy Scheidler, which at the time put Bowling Green ahead 28-27.

 

"He's a warrior. He's beat up. He dislocated his shoulder at Boise (on Sept. 13). Last week we just couldn't run him like we wanted to run him tonight because he was just still so beat up," BG head coach Gregg Brandon said.

 

"He's a sore young man. But he really ran the ball well for us today."

 

As for Turner, he gave all the credit to his offensive line.

 

"The offensive line, my hat goes off to them," Turner said. "They should be in here talking to you guys instead of me. They really should."

 

Akron head coach J.D. Brookhart was not surprised that Bowling Green used Turner as much as it did.

 

"Hes a really good football player," Brookhart said about Turner. "They just use him pretty timely."

"Flat Out Angry" 

The Eagles finished off their non-conference slate with a disappointing 17-13 setback at Army on Saturday in a game that the players and coaches both felt was within their grasp but let get away.

 

Our team was extremely disappointed in not winning the Army game and were flat out angry that we did not execute better in the fourth quarter to take a win out of West Point," said head coach Jeff Genyk. "With that being said, nobody is going to feel sorry for you in this profession, certainly not the Akron players and coaching staff who also had a tough loss. So now our focus is solely on Akron."

 

The team was encouraged though by the rushing output of Dwayne Priest who ran for a season-best 118 yards against Army thanks in large part to what Genyk felt was a solid job by the offensive line.

 

"We were blocking really well," noted Genyk. "A lot of the long runs Dwayne Priest had were blocked all the way to the safety so he did not have to make anybody miss for about the first fifteen yards which is just excellent blocking not just by our offensive line but the wide receivers also."

 

Saturday's home game against Akron is the team's second from last home game already this season. The Eagles don't return home again until the last game of the season, November 28 against Central Michigan, a span of forty days between home games including an unprecedented two-week bye in the middle of November.

 

"I've never seen anything like it," commented Genyk about the awkward schedule.

Jarvis Returns 

Lost in Kent States frustration over another heartbreaking loss last weekend was the successful return to the lineup of feature back Eugene Jarvis.

 

The Golden Flashes were unsure at midweek whether Jarvis would be available to play against Ohio University, but ended up giving the junior all but one of the team's rushing attempts from the running back position.

 

Jarvis finished with 50 yards on 14 carries, and while he wasn't as explosive as he had been before injuring his ankle Sept. 13 against Delaware State, he was still quick and shifty enough to gash the Bobcats for a few runs in the 9-to 11-yard range.

 

Surprisingly, KSU did not complement Jarvis by using sophomore Andre Flowers and Jacquise Terry occasionally in the backfield. Even with Jarvis at less than 100-percent, Flowers only had one rush once for 7 yards. Terry never carried the ball. Both players had shown encouraging development during Jarvis' absence.

 

Jarvis will be closer to full strength when KSU returns from the bye week with an Oct. 25 trip to Miami University, but Flowers and Terry could find their way back into the gameplan by then for at least a few touches per contest.

 

"Well definitely try to play all three of those guys," said KSU coach Doug Martin.

 

"(Flowers and Terry) played on special teams (against Ohio), so they get more time other than just at running back. Obviously, with Eugene coming back, he is a special player and he made some special plays."

In 2005, Tim Hiller was the darling of the Mid-American Conference, winning freshman of the year during an improbable 7-4 season for Western Michigan. Since then, the man quarterbacking the Broncos' rival to the north has gotten most of the (positive) attention.

 

For the first time in their careers, Hiller and Central Michigans Dan LeFevour appear on equal footing performance-wise, making for a heck of a QB duel the next two seasons, beginning Saturday in Mount Pleasant.

 

"That stuff really doesnt matter to me," said Hiller, who's passed for 2,046 yards and 23 TDs against five INTs, while LeFevours thrown for 1,377yards  nine scores and three picks.

 

"He's a great player. I have a lot of respect for him. Their offense is tremendously explosive. It's fun. Things like this are fun, to get to go out and play against great players in a big game like this. That's what you play college football for."

 

For WMU (6-1, 4-0 MAC), it'll only be fun if the recent trend changes. The Chips (4-2, 3-0) have won the last two meetings, including a 31-7 drubbing of the Broncos in monsoon-like conditions in 2006 that propelled CMU to its first of two straight league titles.
