EMU PG Carlos Medlock
Eastern Michigan's hopes for contending for a MAC West divisional title were dealt a serious blow with the news that senior point guard Carlos Medlock is likely done for the season.
Medlock, a preseason All-MAC selection, will have surgery on Tuesday team sources confirmed to MAC Report Online, further indicating that Medlock's season is likely done.
Medlock will have surgery to repair a fractured foot that will require the placement of pins to set the fracture which is an aggravation of the same injury that sidelined Medlock for the latter part of the 2006-2007 season.
According to those associated with the team, the senior point guard had apparently been experiencing pain in his foot and underwent an MRI that confirmed the existence of the fracture. Medlock attended the MAC's annual media day event in Cleveland this past Thursday but the results of the MRI were not know until the next day.
During his junior season in the 2007-2008 campaign, Medlock, a 31-game starter, topped EMU in both scoring and assists, including registering double digits in scoring in seventeen straight games during one stretch. He also finished the season ranked in the top nine in five different individual statistical categories in the MAC this past year, including placing fourth in assists (4.1 apg) and eighth in scoring (14.1 ppg).
The Eagles were picked to finish second in the MAC West in preseason balloting by members of the MAC News Media Association and first by Blue Ribbon Basketball Yearbook.
This marks the second straight season that the Eagles were dealt a blow in the preseason.
Last season forward Brandon Bowdry was lost for the year after suffering a preseason injury that sidelined the forward for the entire 2007-2008 campaign. Bowdry was coming off of a MAC All-Freshman season in 2006-2007 that saw him average 8.3 points and 5.4 rebounds per game.
The team indicated that Medlock will likely apply for a medical redshirt that will enable him to retain eligibility for next season.
