CLEVELAND -- The Mid-American Conference announced its 2006-07 Men's Basketball Academic All-MAC team Wednesday, as voted by faculty athletic representatives at MAC institutions. A total of six student-athletes were named to the team. The number of honorees on the MAC All-Academic Team are the number that is set for the specific sport or 33% of the number of nominees, whichever is greater.
Western Michigan had two student-athletes honored on this year's team. Leading the Broncos was second-team All-MAC selection Joe Reitz. Reitz was also named ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America Men's Basketball First Team this season. The junior from Fishers, Ind. led WMU in scoring (13.9 ppg.) and rebounding (8.6 rpg.) this season. WMU's Andrew Hershberger was also selected to the Academic All-MAC team this season. This marks the second time in as many years that Reitz and Hershberger have been named to the team.
Matt Lefeld represents Bowling Green on the squad after being named third team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Lefeld was also named to the Academic All-MAC team last season. Kent State 's Armon Gates was named to the team after recording 9.2 ppg. and 3.2 caroms per game for the Golden Flashes, while NIU's James Hughes was selected to the squad after scoring 12.1 ppg. and pulling down 6.1 rpg. for the Huskies. Toledo 's Jonathan Amos rounded out this year's academic team after he helped lead the Rockets to its first MAC regular season title since 1980.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
